"Skylines"
Mother Nature let loose her grip on
the weather pattern this weekend, keeping the Gulf of
Alaska low pressure systems and associated rain out of
Southern California and I certainly thank her for it!
It always seems strange to be home on a Sunday rather than
out at the airport.
Those who ventured out yesterday
were able to get a taste of some good ridge conditions in
the morning and wave like conditions in the late
afternoon. The very first tow of the day proved that
the ridge was working. Gary Knapp flew a
Cleveland Flight and Ed Stegman and I joined them in the
bowl. The only bad part was having to come back down
for another student. The ridge was very reliable until
about 2:00 when things started to change. The ridge
died down, but wave like conditions formed over the lake and
down Grand Avenue. The tows were rough by the Ortegas
and felt like rotor, but once you got into the smooth lift,
staying up wasn't a problem.
All in all, it was a good
day. Jeff Winkler and Charlie Laird split the towing
duties with a total in 14 tows for the day. When Gary
wasn't flying Orientation flights, he went up with several
solo students so they could get a taste of the the
conditions without any worry. Thanks to everybody who
came out and made operations possible. Without your
participation, nobody would have been able to enjoy the
unique soaring conditions that occur at
